Becoming Our Best

DEADLINES

The idea of a deadline has always had a certain fascination.   Having lived for, by and with them has been a challenge for me, as I suspect it has for you.   Deadlines help us get things done more quickly and efficiently many times, but at what cost to us as people?   I think the cost to us in the welfare of our body, mind and spirit may be high.   If this is so, how might we better use this powerful tool?   Here are some thoughts:

• Ask yourself if the matter is important or urgent before setting a deadline.   Multiply the time you estimate is needed to achieve the task by 1.5 to get a more reasonable period to complete it.

• Consider the deadline's effect on your team members; consult with them before setting it.

• Many times, you set the deadline yourself.   If that is the case, you can adjust it if there are difficulties in meeting it.

• Remember that the deadline is a tool meant to help you and your team get things done, not cause unnecessary pressure.

The holiday season seems to be one full of deadlines, both self-imposed and coming from business goals, end-of-year activities and many other causes.   Take a long look at the deadlines you must live with and decide which to take seriously and which you can adjust.   Then change the adjustable ones to leave enough time to complete the others gracefully.   Your team and you will be better if you do this simple exercise.
